How much do you genuinely care?

When working with children, rule number 1 is: you need to genuinely care about each and every child. If you don’t genuinely care about him or her as a person with Feelings, Strengths, Weaknesses, Moods, Opinions etc., then you have no right to deal with the child. You must be willing to go out of your own comfort zone to show the child how much you are willing to understand the child’s needs, feelings, thoughts, ideas.

I was once working with a schoolboy who was having trouble academically, socially, and with authority.. After awhile, I started having a lot of success with him. He was getting along better with classmates and teachers, and his academic performance was improving.

One day, the principal asked, “How are things going with that boy?”

I answered, “Very well.”

She asked, “What is it that you do?”

I smiled and I said, “I care.”

So I ask you again: How much do you care, and how do you show it?
